Oxford Spires celebrates reading quiz win

Run by the National Literacy Trust, the National Reading Championship Quiz is a competition that pits teams from schools across the country against each other in eight rounds of questions designed to test all aspects of books and book knowledge.

The Oxford Spires students won their regional heat and will be going to the national finals in London in June to compete against the other 20 regional winners.  Around 500 schools across the country take part, which puts Oxford Spires Academy in the top 20 for literary knowledge by winning their heat.

The regional heat was made up of 18 schools and 26 teams from the Oxfordshire and Berkshire region, a mix of private and state schools and primary and secondary. To prepare for the competition, the students devoted their tutor time to revising, taking part in book quizzes, researching book competition winners, and familiarising themselves with books that have been in the news recently.

Louise Cowley, Headteacher at Oxford Spires said: “The students in the quiz team have done brilliantly and I'm so proud of them as they have put lots of effort into winning this round.  I can’t wait to see how they get on at the national finals! 

"It’s great to take part in activities like this as I believe it helps to cement reading and literacy at the heart of the education we offer here at Oxford Spires Academy.”
